Newburyport Education Foundation Announces Naming Opportunities

The renovated Newburyport High School offers naming opportunities for leaving you mark through (tax deductible) donations to the Newburyport Education Foundation.

Roger Gagnon is the most recent honoree of the Make Your Mark program. His family purchased the naming rights to an office to commemorate his retirement after 35 years at NHS. Mr. Gagnon's wife, Mary Lou, noted that she and her children (all Newburyport alumni) knew he enjoyed his years at NHS and this gift was so appropriate.

The Make Your Mark campaign is an effort by NEF to raise funds through the granting of naming rights of classrooms, offices and other areas of the high school. Opportunities range in price from $3,000 to $100,000 and are noted by a handsome plaque prominently displayed outside the room.

“He doesn't need anything, the money goes back to the schools, and the gift is tax deductible,” said Mrs. Gagnon. She and her children collected donations from friends, family, students and alumni who had been touched by Mr. Gagnon.

“People would rather send a check than shop and it's not hard to ask for money for a good cause,” added Mrs. Gagnon. Further, it had the desired effect. “He was thrilled! And it (the plaque) looks great! We've all gone to ‘visit it',” according to Mrs. Gagnon.

“Wow,” was the word Mr. Gagnon used though he noted the feelings were hard to put into words. “It was overwhelming coming from everybody.” He also noted that NHS faculty and staff were very much a family, “… and I think there are many who deserve this honor.”

Mr. Gagnon was so touched by the gift and enthused about the mission and goals of the NEF that he contacted the organization to see how he could contribute give his new, more relaxed schedule!

The Save Your Seat program was created to raise funds through the naming of seats in the renovated high school auditorium. Jed and Lauren Petty, both graduates of NHS and parents of Newburyport students, purchased naming rights for a seat in honor Kevin Macdonald, Class of 1975, their children's Godfather.

"Kevin is an wonderful Godfather to our children and an important part of our family.  Also, as he is a fellow alum of NHS, Lauren and I knew he would appreciate this gift.  We were thrilled to be able to give him this unique gift and help out the schools at the same time!  I am happy to say that Kevin loved the gift and felt proud to have his name memorialized in this way.  Lauren and I would encourage anyone to consider this opportunity as a wonderful way to honor someone special to them."
